Case Study One

Eagle Language Service S.L. provided a highly professional service within a complex and substantial translation requirement for one of the largest utility companies in Spain.  This project demanded the translation of many thousands of documents from English into Spanish. The translated documents were then presented before the Spanish courts. This assignment was directly related to one of the take-overs that are becoming increasingly frequent on the international stage. For reasons of confidentiality we are not able to publicise the name of our client.

Eagle Language Service S.L. created a team of over 20 translators working exclusively on this project. The team was led by one of our directors ensuring the ultimate accuracy of the translation through strong project management and meticulous proof reading. Everybody on the team was obliged to sign strict and binding confidentiality agreements. All hard copy documents were held in secure storage for the duration of the project. It should also be noted that all the translated documents that were submitted to our client were on paper and officially certified by sworn translators approved by the Spanish Foreign Office.

Due to the sheer size and sensitivity of this project, work was submitted in batches. We submitted over ten million words in total.

Case Study Two

Eagle Language Service S.L. has been collaborating with Marathon Oil Corporation for several years. Although they work all over the world our principal collaboration centres on their involvement in the African republic of Equatorial Guinea. This is the only African country where Spanish is the official language. With our network of offices throughout Spain we were selected as the ideal partner for Marathon. The most critical element of our service to Marathon is to provide a highly responsive translation service. Letters to or from the government frequently need to be translated with extreme urgency.  It is not unusual for us to respond to such instantaneous demands within 15 minutes.

One of the greatest challenges working with Marathon in Equatorial Guinea is the fact that although Spanish is the official language there are many differences in local vocabulary and that of mainland Spain. Our in-house translators have had to familiarise themselves with such changes.  We have an individual vocabulary glossary for each and every one of our clients. In the case of Marathon this glossary is particularly extensive.

The projects we undertake for Marathon are diverse, ranging from technical production reports to complex legal contracts. These complexities are exaggerated by the social, educational and environmental issues that face a multinational company working in an underdeveloped country. Three years ago we were asked if we could send an interpreter to Malabo, in Equatorial Guinea with only 48 hours notice, despite the problems of permits, vaccinations and travel arrangements, we met each and every requirement demanded of us. Our responsiveness and professionalism in this instance has been rewarded by our continuing and thriving relationship with Marathon.

Case Study Three

In 2002, the highly reputable law firm, Valeriano Hernandez Abogados, saw the publication of “Uncommon Law”. This was the culmination of several years work translating a book first published in 1935 which relates the story of 66 court cases that took place 70 or more years ago. These cases caused much bewilderment and amusement at the time.

This translation project was especially ambitious when taking into account the complex nature of these cases. This was exaggerated by the fact that the outcome of each case was based so heavily on the interpretation of the language of the day.

However the final result was a great success and much praised. All the translations were carried out by members of the firm Valeriano Hernandez Abogados but all were under the supervision of Stephen Crook, one of the directors of Eagle Language Service S.L.  This role was a huge challenge and called for extensive knowledge and domination of legal vocabulary in both English and Spanish. This contribution is fully acknowledged in the book and the final result is now available for everyone to consult. Perhaps now the Spanish speaking world will be able to decide “ when does a woman stop being an actress?”, and “ what makes a man reasonable ?”
